Sports
Here at BSG, physical education, sports, and free play work in unison with academic and art-focused subjects to offer a balanced curriculum that offers an integrated and well-rounded approach to whole-child growth. Starting in Kindergarten, physical education centres on play, imagination and exploration, allowing children to develop natural movement skills through joyful, teacher-guided experiences.
Moving into the early primary years, physical education becomes more structured, with children developing fundamental movement patterns, playing modified sports and learning strategy, fair play and working as part of a team.
Throughout this journey, students are given various opportunities to extend themselves and test their skills in a competitive arena. Our school is a registered member of the North Coast Independent Schools Association (NCIS), which comprises a total of 22 independent primary and secondary schools spanning the region from Kempsey to Tweed Heads. This sporting competition offers a pathway for students to progress from local competitions to higher levels of representation at the State and National levels. NCIS sports offered include:
As children progress into the later primary years, physical education shifts toward sport-specific skills, tactics, and greater personal responsibility for fitness and teamwork.
This groundwork culminates in high school as our approach expands into sport-specific performance, biomechanics and fitness training. In this stage, technique is refined and students develop personal responsibility for their health by understanding training principles, teamwork, leadership, resilience, and how physical training supports emotional wellbeing, lifelong fitness, and community engagement.

The overarching focus of our physical education program is to facilitate learning experiences that are inclusive, challenging, enriching and developmentally appropriate. The beauty of being in a small school means that we have the freedom and ability to tailor what we do to meet the needs of each student, regardless of their starting level, to ensure that every individual has a chance to flourish. So no matter where your child is on their journey of development, or what their interests are, we are here to support them to be healthy and whole, and fully capable of achieving their topmost potential.
